Carmel High School proudly announced senior Christian Yom as valedictorian and senior Kyle Grgecic as salutatorian for the Class of 2023. Not only are Yom and Grgecic the top students of their graduating class, but long-time friends. I am writing to you to share the news of a leadership appointment within the district. Our district has already begun the process of reviewing our procedures to determine if any need to be updated in light of the new body-worn camera requirements. We are continuing to work out the specific details about how and when body-worn cameras worn by our SROs will be implemented in certain situations.

That was the scene in Danielle Marino’s History of Art class as the students recently took a virtual field trip to the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. It was a lesson in shaking, rattling, and rolling for Earth Science students in Tracy Brusie’s classes at George Fischer Middle School during a unit on earthquakes. Students used their geology skills and compasses to interpret seismographs from three separate locations, finding the arrival times of primary waves (p-waves) and secondary waves (s-waves) in order to determine the earthquake's epicenter. To be inducted, senior students must have completed at least four business education classes, including at least one college-credit-bearing course, while maintaining an 88% average in those business education courses and an overall average of 85% or greater.

In her campaign announcement last week, McClellan discussed her record on tackling climate change and protecting abortion rights. She also honored the late McEachin, acknowledging she would have big shoes to fill. McClellan is favored to win the primary, and if she goes on to win the special election, she would become the first Black woman elected to represent Virginia in Congress. Morrissey began his campaign last week by targeting Democratic leaders for hosting the primary on a weekday instead of on a Saturday. McClellan moved swiftly to put up campaign signs, knock on doors and make phone calls. As of Monday, she had spent around $15,000 in digital ads, according to FWIW, a newsletter that tracks political ad spending.

Now that the stressors of the pandemic have been greatly reduced and we are able to safely gather together, it is the perfect opportunity to start our Coffee & Connections with the Superintendent events. It has been my desire since I joined the district last year to host regularly scheduled gatherings to hear directly from our parents and community. I am writing to you today to share some exciting district initiatives underway and upcoming community events where you can join in the conversation to help shape the future of our district. As a reminder, should there be a need to delay opening, close schools or dismiss students early from school due to inclement weather, a recorded phone call, email and text will go out from the District. Our district has made so many positive strides forward during her time with us and we are grateful for all that she has done. We will surely miss having her as part of our administrative team, even if it was only temporary, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Congratulations to the latest student-inductees to Carmel High School's chapter of the New York State Business Honor Society. This year, the Career & Technical Education Department inducted 10 high-achieving students and one honorary member, Assistant Principal John Fratto. Before we officially depart for the summer break, I would like to take this opportunity to share a few messages of appreciation and congratulations.

The NAMM Foundation has recognized P-BVUSD for the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who are making music part of a well-rounded education for every child in our district. Thank you for your adaptability, continued creativity, and commitment to meeting the needs of each and every student who entered our buildings, despite any challenges that came your way.

To our Carmel parents and guardians, thank you for sharing your children with us and allowing us to help them grow every day. Our district has spectacular students and that stems from you as parents and guardians. Your support, partnership, and active involvement in your child’s educational journey are a testament to our shared desire for success for each district student.

We look forward to welcoming our students and staff back to our buildings for the first day of the school year later this week. As a reminder, Thursday, September 1, will be a full day of school for our students in grades 1-12, and a modified school day for our incoming kindergarten students with an orientation and bus run. Detailed information about the schedule for the incoming kindergarten students was emailed directly from the elementary schools’ principals.
